Jumbo, born around 1861 in Abyssinia and died on September 15, 1885 in St. Thomas (Ontario), was an African savannah elephant who was the subject of a report in the press such as had never been devoted to a wild animal, which made him famous throughout the world. He was imported to the menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, then transferred to a zoo in London in 1865 and finally sold in 1882 to Phineas Taylor Barnum for his circus, becoming… the darling of the public everywhere.
He died in 1885 following a collision with a locomotive. His skeleton was donated to the American Museum of Natural History. Jumbo was the official mascot of Tufts University for a long time. Famous during his lifetime, he remained so after his death. His name has become synonymous with great size.
