About this artwork
“Tierra” was created between June and September 2025 using pigments extracted from an old stone quarry on the grounds of my finca in Northeast Mallorca. This process is central to my current body of work. “Tierra” is a piece that uses a process inverted to the one I tend to use. Rather than working from black upwards to white, this painting starts with a white base and results in these dark, earthy tones.
The piece is currently available and is… being featured at my first solo exhibition in Mallorca.
Mats de Boer is a German-born, Dutch painter who works between Mallorca and Madrid, creating large-scale, reductionist artworks with natural pigments harvested directly from the land of his family finca. His technique, which he describes as "intricate simplicity," combines a meticulous, process-based approach with the unpredictability of nature, including sun-drying and water painting. His works evoke meditative calm and invite viewers to slow down, uncovering subtle relationships and sensory connections grounded in the earth itself.
