About this artwork
Instead of canvas, I use a support made by stretching a fabric called kanreisha over a wooden frame.
Kanreisha is a loosely woven synthetic polyester mesh, primarily used as a material for agriculture and horticulture.
Using kanreisha as a support has both aesthetic and economic advantages.
When low-viscosity acrylic paint is applied to the support several times with a brush, countless squares of paint automatically emerge.
The paint dries while… suspended within the small spaces created by the mesh of the support.
The artwork consists of areas where the paint is present and areas where it is not, devoid of the conventional "figure-ground" relationship.
The work expresses the conflict and synthesis of "emptiness and solidness" formed by the grid.
Motoaki Yoshikawa graduated from the Department of Architecture, National Institute of Technology, Akashi College. He holds a national qualification as a Licensed First-class Architect in Japan.
Motoaki Yoshikawa, with a background in architecture and a passion for painting, innovatively uses kanreisha—a loosely woven synthetic mesh—stretched over a wooden frame as his support, applying low-viscosity acrylic paint. His technique allows paint to saturate the mesh, creating countless squares that blur traditional distinctions between figure and ground and emphasize the interplay of emptiness and solidity. His geometric grids pulse with color, evoking a profound tension between structure and spontaneity, and inviting viewers to experience the expressive energy woven into the very fabric of his work.
