About this artwork

From the Walls series by the artist.
The series has come about after long contemplation on the theme of landscape.
The modern man unquestioning acceptance of being constantly surrounded by walls.
Enclosed in space.
Always a being in a closed , defined , often rectangular shape…. with its variations.

These walls that define, enclose, shape, guide and entertain us.
Somehow relegated to a subconscious level of our existence.
Stand outdoors, amongst… nature , under a starry sky and open ones arms
and feel a connection to nature , the universe.
Within walls, freedom is rare. One may find a freedom yet the spirit remains entrapped within.
The walls themselves , barricading eternity.

Begun as a series in 2018 , these works have taken on a new dynamic since the pandemic.

« My work captures abstraction, surrealism and the unpredictable. I trace the paths taken by my subjects throughout the creative process. Each work is unique. Each work, a new destination. »

Peter Pitout is an artist based in France, whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
Drawing from his childhood in Durban, South Africa and a background in industrial art and design, he creates paintings that balance structured forms with surrealist gestures.

His multidisciplinary practice spans oil painting, embroidery, and conceptual research, often exploring themes of light, vibration, and transformation. Pitout has participated in several art residencies in France and abroad, using these immersive experiences to deepen his artistic inquiry and expand his visual language.

For him, the creative process is a return to inner roots—a space for reflection, reconnection, and the evolution of artistic consciousness.
