The idea of tension between European style and African influence. The central image is a beautiful model of African descent. Behind her are wonderful prints inspired by African design. The model wears European fashion with a bright orange skirt. This orange skirt colour is repeated in the print and acrylic strokes.
There is an idea that fashion is very Eurocentric with ideas and designers from other parts of the world not getting a fair look in… or being attributed and appreciated for their inspiration.
It also begs the question is the woman in the centre more acceptable despite her skin colour because of her European style of dress?
The acrylic strokes made using a palette knife remind me of the tribal markings etched into skin in certain African lands.
The piece is a celebration of African inspired design while asking difficult questions.
