About this artwork
A succession of geometric shapes, orange and green, structures the canvas like a modern city seen in cross-section. At the top, a line of schematic silhouettes march in a row, like industrial icons. A long red path cuts through the composition, a common thread of a turbulent century.
Here I critique standardization. I denounce the alignment of men within systems that are beyond them, while showing the creative energy of an era. The painting oscillates… between criticism and fascination for a century of excess.
Serge Dumez, a painter and draftsman, began his artistic career with pencil drawing and pastel. His technique fuses the elegance of drawing and the vivacity of pastel, manifesting a predilection for deconstructed representations through cubism. By exploring human relationships in his works, Dumez conveys deep feelings and complex ideas.
