About this artwork
A dense crowd, huddled in the shadows, raises its faces toward a central figure, somber and almost spectral. Open mouths and wild stares convey astonishment, fear, and supplication. The background dissolves into the night, leaving only the anguish of their souls and the presence of a possible savior.
In painting this scene as a tribute to Goya, I thought of his dark visions, his processions of human beings engulfed in madness. Here, I seek the same… intensity: to express the fragility of man delivered to horror, but also the shadow of a master's protection, slender and fragile, like a flickering light in the night.
Serge Dumez, a painter and draftsman, began his artistic career with pencil drawing and pastel. His technique fuses the elegance of drawing and the vivacity of pastel, manifesting a predilection for deconstructed representations through cubism. By exploring human relationships in his works, Dumez conveys deep feelings and complex ideas.
