About this artwork
Collection of Marcia Hemphill, Virgina USA
I was at the Santa Barbara Museum and saw a bas relief of the Three Graces over a doorway. I thought to myself, "The Three Graces" are represented in many different ways. I thought it would be great to have a version with the vaudeville, radio, and TV personality Gracie Allen as one of the three. Who else? Why the beautiful actress and royal, Princess Grace Kelly. The third? Why, the striking singer and… actress Grace Jones, of course.
I soon figured out by showing them on a stage with a backdrop of the Caryatid Porch of the Erechtheion, Athens would tie in both show business and the classical theme.
I had to paint this fun twist on the classical theme, but it had to be big and impressive to make it's point. I painted the ladies in oil on a 5 foot by 6 foot stretched linen that would make them seem near life-sized.
