About this artwork
This large-scale portrait explores feminine power through an abstract interplay of color and form, balancing playfulness with a quiet sensuality.
Built up in layers of acrylic, charcoal, and oil pastel, the semi-abstract figure emerges through bold gestures and textured marks. Intense reds move against cooler blues and purples, creating a sense of tension and release. The composition holds both strength and vulnerability, allowing the figure’s presence… to feel grounded, expressive, and open-ended rather than fixed.
Wesley Cabral is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, drawing, performance, video, and installation, with the human body at the center of her practice.
Her process is rooted in excavation, layering, and deconstruction. These approaches shape her materials and her collaborations. Cabral’s figurative work explores vulnerability, tension, and intimacy, often placing the body in heightened or unconventional scenarios that reveal emotional and psychological complexity. Her ongoing project, The Ecstasy of Surrender, merges multiple media in experiential, collaborative ways. As a muralist, she engages social justice themes, including public works for organizations such as the Oakland LGBTQ Community Center. Her work has been exhibited at the de Young Museum. She holds a BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.
