About this artwork
The TOKYO MONOGATARI Series takes its title from the 1953 film drama by Yasujiro Ozu, although the works in this series of drawings by Wilf Tilley are unrelated in subject matter. The series, begun shortly after the artist moved to Tokyo in 1998, consisted of two portraits and a number of narrative illustrations on various topics. Most of the MONOGATARI works were later destroyed, although THE ADVISERS was restored in 2002. During this period the… artist worked on large scale drawing series, the most notable of which, A HISTORY OF IDEAS, consisting of six panels was executed over two years (1992-3), and featured in an exhibition sponsored by the British Council in Japan. The work, signed verso with artist catalog number, is unframed.
Wilf Tilley's varied background spans acting, neuroscience and various art forms. He employs classical painting techniques with digital modelling, creating a unique blend. His work continuously evolves, incorporating digital advancements, yet upholding traditional hand-eye training. He dives into human and artificial memory, nostalgia, and fabulation, conveying the merging of human experience and emotion with scientific reasoning.
