A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - Greek mythology is an enduring wellspring of artistic inspiration because it provides a universal language for the human condition. The gods, heroes, and tragic narratives embody timeless themes of power, fate, desire, and the fallibility of even the divine. Psychologically, these myths offer a framework to explore our own struggles and desires through powerful archetypes. In contemporary art, artists have re-engaged with these ancient stories to address modern concerns. The legendary artist Pablo Picasso was fascinated by Greek mythology throughout his career, returning to it frequently in his post-1950 work. His prints and ceramics often feature figures like the Minotaur, and his drawing Faun with a Spear (1957) captures the playful yet powerful spirit of these mythical creatures. In a more recent example, the artist Damien Hirst created a monumental series of sculptures to re-imagine these powerful deities. His exhibition "Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable" (2017) features colossal figures like The Colossal Figure of Oceanus, which re-presents a sea god through a contemporary lens of spectacle and fabrication. This collection celebrates the eternal power of Greek myths as a mirror to our own enduring narratives.
