Alex Buchanan, a visual artist with roots in photography, sculpture, and metalsmithing, masterfully repurposes discarded ship’s rope, copper, and recycled papers to create evocative large-scale sculptures, prints, and fiber works. His practice draws on Arte Povera, nautical craftsmanship, and humor, incorporating Morse code and intentionally “incorrect” knotting for conceptual impact. He confronts environmental sustainability and human rights issues while inviting the viewer with wit and absurdity. Ultimately, his artworks stir both reflection and amusement, conveying earnest hope, urgent concern, and resilient optimism for humanity’s relationship with nature and each other.
