One of the UK’s up-and-coming artists, Ed Burkes has quickly built up an impressive list of prizes since graduating from Falmouth University in 2016. It's easy to understand why once you have witnessed his vibrant compositions, which have the capacity of resonating with almost everyone.
Employing a vivid colour palette, Burkes' paintings can be seen as celebrations of commonplace situations, with people going about their everyday lives. This study of the everyday is yet fractured by his painterly technique which obscures their identity, allowing their particularities to disappear.
Burkes enjoys exploring the vacancy in his paintings, and the strange dynamism that occurs through the solid application of colours and the forms they produce. His process is like a journey where his figures are subjected to a loss of identity, shifting its existence out of sync, yet producing a work that resonates a certain honesty, that stands on its own.
Since receiving his BA from Falmouth University Art School in 2016, Ed Burkes has already made a buzz on the London art scene. He was shortlisted for by Bloomberg New Contemporaries, was selected as one of Saatchi Art’s 20 Emerging Artists to Buy Now and selected by Beers London for their annual group exhibition Contemporary Visions VII.
