Ernie Barnes (1938–2009) was an American painter and former professional football player celebrated for his expressive depictions of movement, community, and everyday life. Born in Durham, North Carolina, he studied art at North Carolina Central University before playing in the NFL. His athletic background inspired his signature “elongated” figures and fluid sense of motion. Barnes gained worldwide recognition with his iconic painting The Sugar Shack, featured on Marvin Gaye’s I Want You album and Good Times. In 2022, The Sugar Shack sold at Christie’s for over $15 million, reaffirming his legacy as one of the most important American artists of his era. His works, rich with rhythm and humanity, continue to celebrate the beauty and resilience of Black life.
