Gela Mikava (b. 1995, Zugdidi, Georgia) lives and works in Tbilisi. He is a visual artist exploring inherited trauma, material memory, and the lasting impact of Soviet ideology. Mikava paints on biazi—a Soviet-era cotton fabric once used to cover ceilings. Each piece carries traces of a vanished world.
He calls his work Post-Socialist Radiation, a term he created to describe the invisible but persistent psychological and aesthetic effects of Soviet legacy today. His paintings show faded geometries, ghostly figures, and cold urban scenes where faces blur, reflecting the loss of identity under collective memory.
Trained in painting from childhood, Mikava began using biazi before its political meaning was clear. Now, his art confronts ideological remnants and reveals what remains beneath time’s decay, resisting nostalgia and holding unresolved tension.
