Golnaz Afraz, born in 1981, is an Iranian artist who is now living and working in France. She studied undergraduate painting at the University of Azad in Tehran and then went on to study for two Masters degrees in both Tehran and then in Strasbourg.
Afraz explores a variety of themes in her work, each of which can be seen as poignant in terms of both individual and universal experience. She explores notions of life in the philosophical sense, and in the everyday, all through analysing man and his relationship with nature and his surroundings. Afraz sees herself as a director, planning the different compositions and elements of her works in order to portray different and converging versions of reality.
Moving to France had a profound impact on Afraz’s work and allowed her style to truly evolve. She began to work with much larger formats and learnt to widen her creative vision to adapt to this new artistic and innovative milieu that she experienced in France. Afraz uses a mixed technique, applying acrylic, oil, crayons and felt tips to either canvas or paper.
French and Iranian Success
Afraz has presented her work in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Iran and France. In 2015 she received first prize for her work at the Painted Word award in Los Angeles, USA.
