Katherine Roumanoff grew up surrounded by textile prints, floral embroideries, and the patterns of Kashmir carpets. She uses fabric as her primary material. She salvages it, collects it, cuts it, and assembles it to create characters with expressive poses. These portraits compose a personal diary; each face is the result of a reflection on the world, of a feeling that is revealed. Katherine seeks to escape confusion by revealing the depth of our inner world. It is a dialogue that delicately establishes itself; each work stems from an attempt at discernment. Fabric, humanity's age-old companion, carries stories; it speaks volumes about our vulnerability, our quest for beauty and power. A designer, costume designer, and illustrator, she has created a television series entirely out of fabric for toddlers. Today, in the secrecy of her studio, she pursues an intimate and ongoing dialogue with her favorite material.
