Luisa Mesa - painter, photographer, draftsman

Luisa Mesa is a Cuban-American contemporary artist who was born in Havana, Cuba, and now resides in Miami, Florida. She studied her BFA at Florida International University where she concentrated on photography and painting. Mesa creates abstract works that focus on line, repetition and layering.

All about the process

Though she began with photography, Mesa felt compelled to explore other mediums, developing an intuitive style of repetitive line drawing that forms the backbone of her work. This stems from her belief that an invisible force animates our physical reality, and she is inspired by this ‘unseen’ world. Mesa’s style is intuitive and process-based; new shapes arise, while previously used forms morph and evolve.

Experimenting with media

Mesa is a multimedia artist, working with ink, enamel, watercolour and digital imagery. She chooses colour combinations spontaneously, often marrying non-complementary colours for a unique effect. Mesa also incorporates photographs that have personal meaning, exploring her relationships with other people and places. Digitally combining imagery allows her to generate both remembered and imagined worlds.

Artist on the rise

Mesa has exhibited widely in the USA and overseas in the UK. She regularly participates in art fairs, including ArtExpo New York, Context Art Miami and the Affordable Art Fair in London. Her work is featured in numerous private and corporate collections across the USA and overseas in Dubai.
