American artist Monica Coyne spent most of her life not knowing what a blacksmith was, before finally becoming one in her forties. Coyne views herself as
a collaborator with the steel itself- she is able to shape it with a hammer and tooling, but maintains that the steel always surprises her. Coupling traditional forging techniques with contemporary ideas, Coyne lives and works entirely off the grid using a small solar and hydroelectric system. Coyne's sculptures are elegant, dynamic, and compellingly asymmetrical.
