Natalie Gzoim

Flowers became a way for Natalie Gzoim to explore how emotion can change through color and light. After years of working across design, photography and painting, she found in flowers a way to move beyond depicting them and focus instead on creating a feeling through them.

Working in a single layer on wet paper, she has only a short moment before it dries to build the volume, light and atmosphere of the painting, leaving the first impulse largely untouched.

“Stepping away from expectations that are imposed on us, especially the ones we do not even notice we are already living by. Working in a single layer does not forgive mistakes. It reminds me of life: there is no second attempt, and you have to trust the process while still keeping your own direction.”

Through light falling across the flowers, Gzoim creates an atmosphere of freedom and harmony.

“I want the viewer to feel inner calm, and to feel who they truly are, free from the thoughts and expectations that so often shape us.”
