Serge Boiko is a photographer working primarily in medium format, in the New Topographics tradition. He develops and prints his own work, keeping the full arc from seeing to final object in his own hands.
His path to photography was an unusual one. Trained formally in painting, and holding a doctorate in computer science, Serge brings to the camera both a painter's attention to structure, tone, and surface and a scientist's patience for looking closely at what is actually there.
The result is a body of work built on restraint: frontal, unsentimental compositions that record architecture and landscape plainly, without embellishment or the search for a dramatic moment. He works in sequences rather than single images, letting meaning accumulate across a body of work read together.
His photographs reward a slower kind of attention — finding in the everyday a subtle order easily passed over. The work asks not to be admired so much as to be seen.
