Umberto Stefanelli, a former New Yorker who discovered his art in Japan, captures images with the tangible yet elusive medium of light. A self-styled 'Bordeaux garageman', his pictures portray raw passions and unarticulated emotions through an abstract surreality, with depth added by the art of subtraction. Stripped of pretense and grounded in the uncharted surges of emotion, Stefanelli's work remarkably personifies the unnamed élan.
