Octopus Hunters – from Islands at Work: How the Maldives Survived the Sea
This artwork, Octopus Hunters, appears in my book Islands at Work: How the Maldives Survived the Sea, the second volume of The Maldives Memory Series. It captures a moment of shoreline labour where two figures stand in the shallows, rendered in deep blue silhouettes that echo the indigo palette running through the book.
The foreground hunter holds two octopuses, their forms… suspended like extensions of the sea. Behind him, another figure stands further out in the water while seabirds circle above—a recurring symbol of guidance and abundance in the volume.
This piece reflects the book’s central themes: the sea as teacher, the intelligence of embodied labour, and the quiet heroism of work done without witness. By presenting Octopus Hunters in this series, the visual archive of Islands at Work extends beyond the printed page, preserving the lived history of Maldivian labour in a new space.
Abdulla Yasir is a multidisciplinary artist working in digital and mixed media, shaped by high‑school fine art training and a lifelong engagement with Maldivian cultural authorship. His practice blends minimalism with poetic detail, using clean compositions, muted palettes, and a thoughtful interplay of photographic, hand‑drawn, and typographic elements. His work invites reflection on memory, identity, and the enduring spirit of Maldivian heritage. Yasir is also the creator of The Maldives Memory Series, a literary‑visual project dedicated to documenting and reimagining Maldivian cultural memory. The series includes The Maldives We Remember and Islands at Work, published in hardcover and Kindle editions. Through cultural storytelling, intuitive experimentation, and contemporary narrative design, he transforms simplicity into depth, offering modern interpretations of tradition.
