About this artwork
In “Sisters in Red,” I portray three Maldivian women dressed in traditional red attire, a colour that has always symbolized celebration, strength, and shared identity in our island culture. I arranged them closely together to express connection — the kind of quiet support that exists between sisters, friends, and generations of women.
As I worked on their gold jewelry, embroidered cuffs, and layered necklaces, I wanted each detail to reflect the… beauty and craftsmanship of Maldivian tradition. The gentle hand on the shoulder became especially meaningful to me; it represents reassurance, belonging, and the unspoken bonds that hold communities together.
The warm, patterned background and palm fronds bring a sense of place, echoing the rhythm of island life. My intention was to create a scene that feels both intimate and iconic — a celebration of womanhood, heritage, and togetherness.
