About this artwork
Vienna was rebuilt by women, shifting through the rubble after the Second World War. From the midst of chaos and destruction, they were able to piece back together that which constitutes Austria: the values and talents that are deeply rooted in the history of Austria. How precious this foundation is, put back together piece by piece by the “Trümmerfrauen” (rubble-women) is further emphasised by the richness of materials worked into this piece. Gold,…
coloured silver and abalone shells echo the rooftop pattern of the Stephansdom, found in the heart of Vienna. A stained window, a series of still images from archival film material from the Wiener Linien, photos of women, sifting through rubble, one of the first women trolley conductors, posing proudly in her white boots all come together as a jewel from the Vienna Treasury — our lives, together amid a rich culture and valuable history.
