About this artwork
Ereshikigal is presumed to be a female underworld created, which reminds us of myths like Persephone, who spends half of her time in the underworld and half of her time on the earth's surface, which then are the autumn/winter and spring/summer seasons.
This reminds me in a… Jungian way of women who hide themselves and can only be their true selves half of their time, disconnected from their "earth selves", resigned to living in the "underworld". Ereshkigal is represented here as pregnant, to emphasize the female power of creation, and even in our darkest hours, something better is waiting to be born. Her wings represent her resources, as in the iconic poem by Erin Hanson "Oh but my darling, what if you fly?"
