I completed "Bolus Barracks" as a result of an Artist Residency in Cill Rialaig, Co. Kerry in Ireland during 2016. The print is one of a series of six prints that I commenced during the residency. The subject matter for the series of prints is the beautiful and wild landscape around Bolus Head. I divided my time between walking the landscape and developing the artwork back at my residency studio. It was a magical experience. When I returned to my… home studio in Co. Meath, I developed the series and created screens for screenprinting the images. I used acid-free tissue paper to create watercolour backgrounds for the screenprinting. I used my etching press to adhere the chine colle watercolour backgrounds to Fabriano printing paper. Then I screenprinted the image on top of the watercolour background. The print is in a variable edition of 12 prints, and this is No 1. No two prints in the edition are exactly alike, due to the variation in the watercolour backgrounds.
Aidan Flanagan is a self-taught Irish printmaker who began with watercolours and now expertly blends printmaking techniques such as screenprinting, carborundum, drypoint, and chine collé. He uniquely fuses delicate watercolour chine collé backgrounds with layers of prints, embracing the unpredictability of variable editions and using papers like acid-free tissue and Chinese rice paper for texture. His evocative landscapes capture the ever-changing spirit of Ireland’s wild places, transporting the viewer into moments of awe and wonder.
