Continuing, the use of dripping and flat brushwork provide an incessant vibration to the painting. The dripping itself is matter that drips, while that compact and flat brushstroke represents the exact opposite, almost the elimination of the painting.
This last gesture is, in my opinion, the most recognizable intuition and feature of Air: so immediate as to be universal and instantly understandable, this movement… divides the image as if it wanted to simplify it into a grid, making the space more calculable and practicable while, at the same time, reaffirming it as foreground. The choice to coordinate it with the pantone of the painting in every appearance is extremely elegant, the result is a chromatic liaison that continually reminds us of the pictorial and illusory nature of what we are observing.
