About this artwork
Southern Right and Humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to the southern tip of Africa every year to nurse their young. I am lucky enough to live in Cape Town and see these magnificent animals close to the shoreline. They have, as a result, inspired and left me in wonder since I was a young child.
I try and capture their size, grace, movement and care of their calves in my paintings. I like to use the serenity of white water and blues to create… their rollicking form in the ocean, to catch their essence.

AJ Burns, a civil-engineer-turned-artist, breathes vibrant life into his expressionist acrylic paintings. Rooted in minimal tools, his transformative technique involves blowing paint across the canvas, creating riveting aquatic dynamics and abstract forms. He captures the subtle, tranquil undertones of the water's surface, transmuting the profound calmness and intrigue it imbues.
