About this artwork
This work was started some time ago, then completed recently during the lockdown period. The six canvas boards are not normally what the artist is accustomed to, but with running out of paper, this was a good opportunity to try something new. The six pieces have been attached together to form a concertina book. It can either be mounted and framed as you wish, or left as a book. The back of the boards have been gilded, then both sides are varnished,…
using a Matt finish.

« The creation of highly textural abstract works that leave space for the viewer to add their own interpretation. »
The textural effects inherent in Alan James Mcleod's multi-layered works evoke worn and weathered surfaces. Inspired by decorative architectural details and artifacts, they contain their own multidimensional histories. Mcleod's mixes gouache and water-based paints onto paper, often using a rubbing of clear wax between layers, then scraping to reveal what lies beneath. He also joins papers, edge to edge, or collages his pieces together.
