About this artwork
Made up from many different papers, I have painted over the last few years. They have been collaged together, then metal leaf has been layered on top. The leaf is then scraped off to reveal what's underneath.

« The creation of highly textural abstract works that leave space for the viewer to add their own interpretation. »
The textural effects inherent in Alan James Mcleod's multi-layered works evoke worn and weathered surfaces. Inspired by decorative architectural details and artifacts, they contain their own multidimensional histories. Mcleod's mixes gouache and water-based paints onto paper, often using a rubbing of clear wax between layers, then scraping to reveal what lies beneath. He also joins papers, edge to edge, or collages his pieces together.
