About this artwork
An imagined ancient artefact, bringing to mind a sun-disc or shield. Using water-based paint and metal leaf on paper, to create the illusion of an object weathered and worn by time.

« The creation of highly textural abstract works that leave space for the viewer to add their own interpretation. »
The textural effects inherent in Alan James Mcleod's multi-layered works evoke worn and weathered surfaces. Inspired by decorative architectural details and artifacts, they contain their own multidimensional histories. Mcleod's mixes gouache and water-based paints onto paper, often using a rubbing of clear wax between layers, then scraping to reveal what lies beneath. He also joins papers, edge to edge, or collages his pieces together.
