Velázquez painted a room where everyone is looking at someone we cannot see — the viewer becomes the subject, the subject becomes the viewer. Foucault wrote pages about it.
I wasn't interested in the argument. I was interested in the girl.
The Infanta Margarita stands at the center of Velázquez's masterpiece, caught in a moment of pure, unselfconscious existence — neither posing nor performing. I took her out of that room and asked a different question:… what if she met herself?
In Dialéctica, she appears twice. One dark, one light. One holding a green apple, one holding red. Mirror images that aren't quite mirrors — because opposites never are. Between them, a third figure emerges from the background, neither one nor the other, formed from the collision of both.
This is the union of opposites that philosophers have chased for centuries. Not harmony — dialectic. The tension that produces

Alejandro Reyna is a Mexican painter and muralist trained at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
