About this artwork
I chase a paradox of a silence which is never empty. I wanted to paint the very act of listening, to capture that particular vibration of urban quiet, when the city holds its breath but continues to live, to whisper. I built this piece as an archaeology of the inaudible. I let the cool, deep greys spread across the canvas like a dusk or a nascent dawn, that in-between space where perception becomes sharper. Then came that cold yellow, a spark, a… charge that runs through the stillness. It is not the colour of sunshine, but that of a streetlamp flickering on, a distant window, a ripple in the air. And finally, there was the gesture. The water diluted the paint, creating veils, murmurs. The charcoal intervened with its drier, sharper, more energetic marks: fine scars, seismic impulses. These are the signs of persisting life. The creak of a floorboard, the sigh of a ventilation system, the tremor of an invisible grid. This canvas is my attempt to make visible the electricity of silence.
"Aleksandra Nowak is a visual artist, translating her training in painting and her musical background. She implements a contemporary style, combining the abstract and the expressive with figurative elements inspired by the sounds that surround her. Questioning the relationship between human architecture and nature, and exploring the role of women in society, her works depict a sensory meditation on each chosen theme."
