About this artwork
This spacious lyrical painting is inspired the the artist's love of the elements, particular the sea and the sky. The expansive tranquility is contrasted with energetic gestural brushwork. The blue is calming and spiritually uplifting. The sense of light and depth is created by using many layers of transparent colour glazes.
This work is done with thin layers of transparent colour glazes. This makes it glow seeming from within. The title is inspired… by the German - Die blaue Stunde - a poetic term for dusk.
It is on heavy artist-quality paper, professionally mounted on synthetic board. The surface is quite textured and you cannot see it is not on canvas. It is framed in a pale limed wood shadow frame. (The in-situ pictures are not exactly right - the frame is paler than the pics.) The artist's signature is on the back.
« My works are reduced inner landscapes that invite the viewer to interpret the mood or atmosphere, whether calm, meditative, melancholy, playful, or joyous. »
Alethea Eriksson is a South African–Swiss artist based in Baden, Switzerland. Her lyrical expressionist paintings have been presented in both solo and group exhibitions across Switzerland, as well as at art fairs in Britain and Germany. She describes her abstract landscapes—what she calls “soulscapes”—as a form of visual poetry, expressing the sense of renewal and wellbeing she experiences in nature. Her work explores the mood and energy of landscapes, skies, the sea, and her own garden, while also engaging deeply with color, line, and form. Inspired by masters such as Monet and Cézanne, alongside Abstract Expressionists like Joan Mitchell and Cy Twombly, Eriksson creates compositions that invite the viewer to feel moved, uplifted, and immersed in a contemplative emotional space. Alethea Eriksson is a member of the Swiss Association of Women Artists.
