Alex Grotjahn

Italy

Alex Grotjahn, a largely self-taught painter, introduced to acrylics by Petr Hrbek in 1998 in Berlin, works with oil, acrylics, lacquer, spray paint on diverse surfaces like canvas, wood and ceramic plates. Shifting mercurially across registers of semi-abstract figuration and pure abstraction, Alex sees the canvas as an entry point for the rationally unexplainable magic of poetic resonance through color. According to Alex, whenever this magic takes place, the art work is self-explanatory and self-sufficient. No need for academies and third-party contributions to validate his art. Alex has had several solo and group shows and he also participated in art fairs in Düsseldorf and Cologne, but he decided to leave the gallery, to drop out of the art world system. He is appalled by an art market that uses artsy life style and artist identity as its capitalist currency. The more exceptional the result, the more abundant the grace.
