About this artwork
Bristol was the first piece I made in this series. It was a very experimental process but I really wanted to challenge myself to experiment and not be afraid of covering up elements I had previously painted. This led to a lot more layering than I would typically do. As the layers progressed I was creating more depth and interest while also blocking in elements to avoid overwhelming the eye. I also didn’t limit my color palette. Because of the layering…
process I was less concerned with initial color choices and more concerned with creating pattern and linework that felt unified and exciting. The final layers were really about refining what was already on the canvas and harmonizing pattern, line, shape and color.

« Through the meditative expression of emotion, I explore the turbulence of anxiety on canvas — melding color field exploration, pattern, gestural brushwork, and acrylic pours to conjure relatable chaos. »
Art has always been an escape from reality for Alex Watson. Vital for his well-being. Through the act of painting, he transforms negative energies into something meaningful and hopes to inspire others to do so as well. Watson primarily works with acrylics and uses a variety of mixed media tools for mark-making. His gestural strokes are organic in form, taking on geometric and angular shapes through many layers.
