These works were originally part of the New Things series, which Michael Murray very accurately described as ‘contemporary geometrical 3D still life.’ They continued and developed a new approach in visual art and architecture that I call Cartoonism.

The innovation of this direction lies in the fact that form doesn’t just return — it dominates over meaning.

This marks a radical departure from the traditional and mainstream art practices of the… last century, where meaning dominated form in both art and architecture.

However, as the number of these works grew, it became clear that they needed to be separated into their own series, titled Eidolon.

They are still ‘geometrical 3D still lifes’ with reflective, self-aware form, but executed with a stronger abstract component — technically freer and more expressive, almost in the spirit of modernism.
In that sense, this series is a kind of bridge between a fading and an emerging visual language.

Alexander Lufer is an experienced painter based in Germany whose work has been featured in solo and group shows internationally. With a background in architecture, Lufer developed his artistic practice inspired by the Dutch Vanitas and artists like Jeff Koons. Working in oil on canvas, he explores themes of technology and the tension between tradition and modernity through altered landscapes and unexpected still lifes.
