About this artwork
This painting depicts a long disused cemetery on low ground. High up above, a temple cemetery building in a dense clump of trees watches over the graves. This painting uses a wide range of mark making techniques, combined with a rich green field of unifying colour.
Alexis Butterfield draws upon his architectural background and fine art printmaking training, working in mixed media with a foundation in drawing. He marries figurative drafting techniques with abstraction and semi-abstraction, using layers to reflect the historic strata of urban landscapes and heightened, cinematic lighting. Through evocative use of empty spaces and a keen observation for history and detail, his art celebrates resilience and sense of place in the urban scene.
