About this artwork
Fado is a very traditional Portuguese musical genre that assumes the representation of destiny as an inevitable, poetic and tragic destiny, a story that is told, felt and sung.
I expressed this idea with some visual elements fused into a rather strange recipe.
The Douro River in the background, with the typical boats carrying barrels of Port wine, confers a poetic atmosphere, on which a guitar, the singer Amalia Rodrigues and the figure of the… Karo man with a painted face are superimposed.
In the background we can read excerpts from Amália's fado lyrics and, throughout, scribbles that symbolize musical notes written in a naive way. It captures a moment full of emotion, where music becomes a universal language that transcends the fabric and fills any space with energy. My intention is for each viewer to immerse themselves in this evocative atmosphere and find their own meaning within its deep layers.

« I like to jump with the images and create tensions, to focus the attention of some icons on account of their opposition to other more familiar ones. »
Alvarenga Marques is an award-winning Portuguese painter whose works have been extensively exhibited on a national level, as well as in Spain, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. Through her art, she conveys themes relating to childhood imagination and vandalism. She also incorporates images of pop stars and icons in her paintings, blending regional or tribal images in a playful and often ironic way. Marques' vibrant collages are created using acrylics and oil pastels on canvas or wood.
