About this artwork
This composition of nine squares brings ancient architecture into contact with modern symbolism. At its center is a high-contrast black-and-white photograph of the Parthenon in Athens – an icon of democracy, aesthetics, and the origin of Western civilization.
Around this anchor point are grouped eight variations in the colors of the original Gilbert Baker rainbow flag from 1978. The grid runs through the full spectrum: pink (sexuality), red (life),… orange (healing), yellow (sunlight), green (nature), turquoise (art), blue (harmony) and violet (spirit).
The monochrome coloring emphasizes the geometry and texture of the marble. As a Pop Art interpretation, the work connects the heritage of Greece with the LGBTQ+ movement and the timeless desire for diversity and acceptance.
