About this artwork
This drawing focuses on a piano sheet that has been covered with a clear plastic sheet to preserve its surface and history. I began by closely observing the sheet and its plastic covering, making a couple of iterations of the crumpled plastic foil, noting reflections, wrinkles, and shadows created by the protective layer. A graphite underdrawing established the basic shapes and folds.
Using coloured pencils, I then built layers to represent the… paper’s tone, the texture of the plastic, and the way light interacts with both surfaces. Subtle highlights and reflections were added last to give the sheet a realistic, three-dimensional presence.
The completed drawing emphasises the relationship between the object and its protective covering, documenting both the piano sheet’s historical character and the act of preservation, while avoiding physical damage to the original.
