About this artwork
The story of a painting
Many years ago, I spent a few hours a week at the National Museum in Stockholm copying the old masters, including Anders Zorn. After some time I got my own little studio at the museum. The caretakers carried up the paintings from the storeroom that I wanted to copy. One of these works was a portrait painted by Zorn I stood with the palette in one hand and some brushes in the other. On the palette, in addition to Zorn's classic… colors black, white, red and ocher, there was also a small brass cup with turpentine mixed with painting medium. I had been painting concentrated for a long time with the center of gravity on my right leg. When I was going to change position, my left foot had fallen asleep, at least I had no feeling there. I fell headlong with the color palette straight into the original painting. But I was lucky. I could wipe the original painting clean.
