About this artwork
The work belongs to the “Prehistoric wave” collection, created by Benetti with the collaboration of the Departments of Arts of the University of Bologna and of Biology and Evolution (Archaeology of Prehistory) of the University of Ferrara. The works created on canvas are inspired by rock painting, using chalk, marble and pietra serena powder. They are then pigmented with archaeological material dating back to the Paleolithic (earth, ocher and coal).… The pigments, supplied to Benetti and certified by the University of Ferrara, were used 40,000 years ago by a prehistoric man in the Fumane cave (VR), to paint five stones, found in the archaeological excavation, together with the pigments. With this Collection, Andrea Benetti creates an ideal bridge, which unites contemporaneity with the origins of art. He highlights the similarity of today's way of communicating, based on iconography and the extreme simplification of signs, with part of the symbolism, typical of rock painting.
« The painting of the future was born in caves, since art has always been the most fascinating medium with which matter depicts the spirit. »
Andrea Benetti is the author of the Manifesto of Neo-Rock Art, presented at the 53rd Venice Biennale. Several universities have conducted graduate research on his art. He has collaborated with many universities to organize exhibitions and seminars on Neo-Rock Painting (Universities of Bari, Bergamo, Bologna, Ferrara, Johns Hopkins University, Lecce, Messina, Roma Tre, and Venice). In 2020, he won the "Nettuno d'Oro" Award from the city of Bologna. His biography appears in major encyclopedias, including Treccani, De Agostini, and WikiArt, and is translated into 45 languages on Wikipedia.
