Ares, son of Zeus and Hera, is the universally feared god of war in Greek mythology. He delights in the naked violence of war and draws his strength from it. He is merciless even towards women,… children and the elderly, and thus towards all the innocent victims of his wars. Ares' brutal nature and his insatiable desire for destruction make him an ambivalent figure who often inspires contempt and fear in equal measure. This naturally puts him in constant conflict with his powerful sister Athena, the daughter and favorite child of Zeus. Athena, herself a goddess of war, prefers cunning and strategy to brute force.
