About this artwork
I'm certainly no fan of classic animal depictions – neither painted nor drawn. But as soon as it becomes dramatic, has a literary connection – like in Animal Farm or Poe's The Raven – or is simply unusual and funny, even I venture to tackle an animal motif. That's how it was with this dog. I really don't know much about dogs; perhaps I could tell Lassie from a poodle, but that's about it. This one immediately reminded me of the little "terrorist"…
from an old Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau film – with a striking resemblance to his owner.
The black background came about in a somewhat unusual way this time. To test whether I should darken the background as much as I've done so often before, I held a piece of cardboard covered in Scriptol paint behind it. I liked the result – and especially the random textures on the cardboard – so much that I would have loved to use them exactly as they were.

Andreas Noßmann is a draftsman based in Germany whose works have been exhibited nationally and in the Netherlands. Having always been fascinated by topics that touch or disturb, his artistic practice is also marked by his requirement for "a perfect graphic implementation". Noßmann's distinctive and diverse landscapes, portraits, and still-lifes are created with pastels, graphite, pencils, India ink, chalk, and charcoal on paper, canvas, or cardboard.
