While contemplating the Möbius strip, drawn by MC Escher, the idea of a three-dimensional interpretation of this phenomenon arose, thus challenging visual perception. Escher's depiction of ants on a seemingly endless path along a strip is unique from both a mathematical and geometric perspective, as it is non-orientable. That is, one cannot distinguish between inside and outside. And it is precisely this phenomenon, translated into the third dimension,… that presents the challenge. The visual and narrative implications of the Möbius strip are manifold – it is a fitting allegory for the loss of control (I still find the comparison with social, political, or economic developments very apt). We rarely realize that our perception of our world is not logical.
Andres Klimbacher works as a metal sculptor with a strong constructivist background and has exhibited numerous times at home and abroad. He creates three-dimensional objects from metal panels, particularly using the Möbius strip as a formal and thematic leitmotif, exploring the limits of spatial imagination. His works challenge the viewer, encourage reflection on perception and reality, and trigger powerful "aha!" moments of emotional insight.
