Between captures a moment suspended between departure and arrival, certainty and surrender. Standing in the warm, dark sea beneath a restless sky, the solitary figure becomes a symbol of transition — a presence caught between what has been left behind and what has yet to emerge.
The painting was inspired by the following poem written by the artist:
Between
I stepped into the warm, heavy sea
one evening
beneath a restless sky.
On the shore remained…
the failures
I once carried.
And my weary soul
left its trace
in my hair.
I do not know
whether it was a fall
or if I merely stumbled,
clinging awkwardly
to the wrong side of life.
I simply stood there,
as if at a crossroads.
And solitude acquired
a new definition.
It became peace and mystery,
captivity and dreaming,
hope and waiting.
An Skal (Anita Perkovic Skalic), born in Split, Adriatic Coast, holds a Master of Arts and a Master of Science from the University of Zagreb in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences, which informs the intellectual and narrative depth of her work. Her artistic education was developed through study at the "Paleta" School of Fine Arts, where she completed the 4th degree under the mentorship of prominent painters.
Her path is further validated by her selection for the Premio Brera 2026 in Milan and her inclusion in the "100 Artists of Europe" publication (Cultural Lab, 2026). To date, she has presented her work in two solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions, consistently exploring the dialogue between poetry and visual art.
