About this artwork
I created this painting using a palette knife technique with acrylic paints. In the upper third, the harbor entrance opens up, accentuated by deep Payne's Grey tones that mark a clear boundary between land and water. In the middle, the sea stretches out in shades of blue and beige, bright and wide, inviting you to gaze out. The traces of my palette knife work on the horizon leave room for interpretation—they can appear like the sails of ships leaving…
the harbor and gathering speed. The lines on land can also be interpreted: like cranes, perhaps a shipyard, places of departure and movement. The light on the water, in particular, carries this mood further—it traces the trail of the ships heading out to sea.
This painting brings the vastness of the sea, the lightness of light and water, into your home, giving the room a quiet openness."

Anja Andreae works as a painter with diverse materials such as marble powder, limestone, earth, and everyday objects, bringing with her a background in object design, art education, and art therapy. She combines collage and palette knife techniques in her works; striking structures, powerful lines, and surprising contrasts—for example, coarse burlap next to gold—characterize her multifaceted style. Her artworks address existential questions, the search for identity, and the transcending of inner and outer boundaries, creating a space of vivid insight and profound emotional resonance for the viewer.
