About this artwork
On my safari trips to photograph wildlife in Southern Africa, I encountered Khoi San rock art. It occurred to me that it and the graffiti I'd been photographing in Europe were both forms of self-expression. Using a photographic base, I paint, draw, and spray (paint) my way into an exciting world in this vibrant fusion of old and contemporary expression. The lioness and the bird are symbols of strength and beauty. I've merged the majesty of the animal… kingdom with the raw energy of street art. Crafting with acrylic, graffiti, pen, spray, and ink, I aimed to capture a dynamic dialogue— the roar of the mighty and the song of the small. It's a dance of contrasts, highlighting the beauty of coexistence. This piece will enliven your space with its energetic hues and thought-provoking juxtapositions. Both photos I photographed in the Kgalagadi National Park, South Africa.
« Our lives are the canvas and, as such, we are both the creator and the creation. »
Ann Gadd, an award-winning South African painter, has exhibited nationally and in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Italy. In her works, she employs lightness and humor to reflect the profound, often using African symbolism to celebrate her heritage and illustrate her country's paradoxes. Usually painting in series, Gadd’s unique blend of naive and pop is translated through acrylics on canvas. Her ADD means she switches from series according to mood. Recently longlisted for the Visual Art Open 2024 UK, International Emerging Artist Awards. Finalist in the Singulart International Women's Day 2025 Award "Being a finalist is a remarkable achievement—one that reflects the strength and originality of your work."
